Certified Child Life Specialist at the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto, providing support to patients, parents and siblings undergoing treatment.

When Maureen Carney set foot in The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) for her high school co-op, her goal was to work there permanently one day. And that’s just what she did!

After graduating from St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Secondary School in Tottenham, Maureen attended the University of Guelph where she obtained her Bachelor of Applied Science - Child, Youth and Family. She then pursued her Masters of Child and Family Studies - Child Life Concentration from Ohio University and graduated in 2017.

Maureen put her studies to great use by volunteering at various organizations such as Child Life in Cape Town, South Africa, Camp Quality Southern Ontario, Give Kids the World Village Florida, Children’s Hospital Colorado and Guelph General Hospital.

Thanks to her extensive experience working with children, she was hired as a support worker in 2013 with the Community Living Association for South Simcoe (CLASS) where she remained until 2018 when she landed her dream job at SickKids in Toronto.

Maureen returned to the place where it all started in the role of Certified Child Life Specialist. She has the meaningful and inspiring job of providing support to patients, parents and siblings and to help reduce the stress associated with illness and hospitalization.

“My Catholic education has played a big part in shaping my career pathway. I have always been fortunate to be part of a faith-filled learning environment. Ever since setting the goal of working at SickKids, I have strived to maintain a sense of altruism, which is something that has been emphasized in Catholic education.”
