Professional hockey player Lauren Dabrowski overcame multiple childhood surgeries and setbacks to become a First Team All-Canadian defender and pursue her dream of playing professionally.
Lauren Dabrowski knows what perseverance looks like.
She was born with congenital short femur, a condition that left one leg shorter than the other. As a child, she faced repeated surgeries, months on crutches, and long stretches away from hockey, the game she loved. Seven major surgeries shaped her early years. Still, she returned to the ice again and again.
Hockey gave her a goal and a sense of purpose. When coaches questioned her skating stride, she trained harder. When injuries slowed her progress, she refused to step away. Her determination carried her from local rinks in Simcoe County to university hockey and eventually the professional ranks.
After graduating from St. Theresa’s, Lauren continued her studies at St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia, where she emerged as one of the top defenders in Canadian University Sports (U SPORTS). She led all defenders in scoring and earned First Team All-Canadian honours.
Lauren’s talent and drive eventually took her across the Atlantic. After playing professionally in Sweden for a year, she spent the following two years competing in Switzerland, fulfilling a dream she first imagined while watching Saturday-night hockey with her family.
Her journey has never been easy. Doctors warn that her condition will likely require a hip replacement later in life. Yet, Lauren continues to play the game she loves with gratitude and courage. This fall, she begins a new chapter, returning to Ontario to pursue her Bachelor of Education while continuing her competitive career playing for Nipissing University.
Her story reflects a simple truth: when life presents obstacles, faith, resilience, and hard work can carry you forward.
Lauren’s path reminds us that the strength of spirit often grows through adversity.
