Educator and cultural leader Tory Fisher advances Indigenous language revitalization and curriculum development while supporting students and communities in the Nipissing First Nation.
Tory Fisher has dedicated his life to strengthening language, culture, and community.
A member of the Nbisiing First Nation, Tory began his journey by learning Nishnaabemwin from his grandmother and family. Those early teachings, rooted in language, land, and tradition, shaped his lifelong commitment to share knowledge and support the next generation.
Tory is a teacher of Nishnaabemwin and Indigenous Studies at Nbisiing Secondary School in North Bay and a member of the Ontario College of Teachers. In the classroom, he encourages students to see themselves as leaders and to carry their learning forward for the benefit of future generations.
His work extends beyond the classroom. Tory has contributed to provincial curriculum development, including the Ojibwe Language curriculum, and has worked with the Ministry of Education to ensure Indigenous perspectives are reflected with care and accuracy.
He is also an author, cultural leader, and ceremonial helper in his community. Through writing, teaching, and cultural leadership, Tory continues to support language revitalization and deepen understanding of Indigenous histories and ways of knowing.
Whether on the land, in the classroom, or in ceremony, Tory’s work reflects a deep sense of responsibility to others.
He leads with humility, shares with generosity, and works to build a stronger future grounded in respect, identity, and community.
